Sofia Municipality is an administrative-territorial unit, which has the status of a region.
Sofia Municipality comprises 38 localities, including 4 cities: Sofia, Bankya, Buhovo and Novi Iskar and 34 villages.
Sofia Municipality is a legal entity with its own property - public and private and its own budget. The government of the municipality - the Sofia Municipal Council and the Mayor of Sofia are elected by the citizens of Sofia Municipality for a term of 4 years.
The municipal authorities determine and implement their policy for the development of the municipality, resolve problems of local nature related to the economy, environmental protection, healthcare, social, educational, cultural, community and utilities-related activities, spatial planning, disposal and management of municipal property, traffic safety and public order, etc.
The municipal council elects permanent and temporary committees specializing in particular areas. Currently operate 13 standing committees.
Sofia Municipal Council, if necessary, may establish specialized bodies. For the implementation of the municipal program for transformation and privatization of the municipal enterprises, Sofia Municipal Privatization Agency is established.
The Mayor of the municipality, as an executive body, manages all the executive activities of the municipality; he/she is responsible for public order, budget implementation, and implementation of long-term programs and has also other specific functions. The municipal administration is structured in functional and sectoral departments and units, governed by Deputy Mayors elected by Sofia Municipal Council directions from the municipal council elected by the Mayor's Council on a proposal from the Mayor.
Sofia is divided into 24 districts. The mayors of the regions resolve problems arising from the daily needs of the population at the place of residence, administrative services of the citizens, development, cleaning and maintenance, etc.
